BIG PIKE UNDER TIP UPS

Two years ago I learned how to outwit those big pike. First of all, find where the old timers are catching big pan fish, preferablly in water under ten feet, then go to the out skirts if them, where the shallow water flat break's off into deep water{30ft+}, the break line should break fairly fast.In Minnesota were able to put out two line's, so on the edge of the flat, where it break's from 10ft to 30ft, ill place one tip-up and at 17ft ill place another, the trick to all this ,now that you got your tip-ups in the right place, is BIG SHINERS!!With only 1\16oz split shot 10in above your minnow, on 20# mono, use A 6-8in shiner, its A fool proof way to get those big pike!! Try it, and let me know how big they were, GOOD LUCK.

This is a very good tip, correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems you are fishing lakes. I do alot of pike fishing in back bays of big fast moving rivers, and utilizing stucture as listed above, except that in rivers, pike will frequent much shallower water than in lakes, 3 to 5 feet of water is plenty at first ice, and at last ice we caught them in as little as 2 feet of water under the ice. I do alot of fishing in Quebec where live minnows are illegal, but have great success using frozen smelt, cisco, even saltwater herring and mackeral.

I fish lake champlain in upstate ny each year and have had lots of sucess as follows:
1- use large bait, i prefer 8-12" suckers. This is important..TRIM the fin material of off the tailfin, this prevents the bait from getting enough foward propulsion to trip your flag and makes the bait wiggle a lot more.
2- i route my braided line thru a button so it is adjustable as a depth marker for repeat settings without having to resound the hole.
3- location,location,location...the guys above nailed it well. good luck/ tightlines/ FLAG!!!!

I live in Western Massachusetts, most of the lakes in my county are shallow ( not usually more than 15' of water ) My question is, any tips that will keep me from going all day without catching Bass/ Pike? There are a lot of lunkers in our lakes, I know they are there, need some tips.

I found the tips very helpful. I've always been very lucky in having 6-10 runs a day, but i could'nt seem to land a montser. Lasts weekend i used the tips, and my first run of the morning was a 39",weighing 17lbs.10oz.

I agree 100%!!. The only thing I would do differently is try some sevenstrand steel leader. The uncoated stuff is as thin as mono but impossible to have cut or break.Try the 27lb. test it does not seem to kink too bad.My buddies and I can catch toothy critters all day on this stuff without a problem. TIP-UP!!!

Try this. You know where the big browns are, now go to the K-mart and find half-dozen fat juicy goldfish. Hook 'em light and jig 'em easy near bottom. Now hold on and keep an eye out for the game warden. It works! just kidding, ofcourse.

Try taking a # 2 hook with a steel leader and putting the loop end of it through the hole of a # 4 treble hook. The treble hook (called a "stinger")slides down and goes into the top (back) part of a dead 8" sardine and the # 2 single hook goes into the belly to hold the dead bait in a horizontal postion !! Got me an 18 pound 41" Northern !!!

Zach Dooley-
When you have a tip out out or two maybe, and you are out doing something else and you glance over to your flags, and you notice one is up...You run over there and the fish is taking the line really fast.. you may think the fish is hooked and you give it a tug just like that...the fish isnt hooked..he may just have the your bait in it's mouth..give it time..pull the line and if you feel tension, give it a few seconds..then give it a pull...i have caught more fish doing it this way...try it once..and tell me how it goes

Wonder if Paddy K is really kiddin? Heard goldfish are cats pajamas for pike, anyone know for sure? Are they legal on Fletchers Floodwater in Mich? I`ve taken a few nice pike here and also had some slack times. When your jiggin for perch or crappies do you drill 10 holes and then start jiggin so if you dont hit nuthin in one in a few minutes you can just move to the next? Seems that if you drill a hole and then fish it, you are spooking your own fish, then you move and drill again and do it again.I love all these tips! GOOD FISHIN!!

RJ, when your fishing pike deep (25+)keep your bait up,3'-6'off the bottom mabey even more, depending on the amount of traffic on the ice. When your fishing them off A break line (10'-20')keep your bait within 3' of the bottom, but dont restrict your bait with too heavy of A weight, let your minnow swim, he need's to look natural, not like he's got A 3lb weight on his back, good luck mac!

RJ,
You have to put your minnow about a foot or foot and a half from bottom. Because of where a Pikes eyes are located, He will not attack anything below him, he can't see it. Kapt Ron is right about using a line marker. He uses a button but you can buy tiny line marker bobbers. Don't forget to compensate for how much ice you have. After you set your tip up, If there is still let's say 6 inches of ice below your reel, you have to take up that much more line before you put your line marker on, if not you are going to sit on bottom. ggod luck, stay on top

I've had some really good success using BIG minnows, I don't use any sinkers what so ever I let the minnow out just a short ways below the bottom of the ice allowing light shining into the hole to illuminate the shiner. Works best on overcast days as too much light has the opposite effect, also very shallow no more than 4 feet.
