I fish lake champlain in upstate ny each year and have had lots of sucess as follows:
1- use large bait, i prefer 8-12" suckers. This is important..TRIM the fin material of off the tailfin, this prevents the bait from getting enough foward propulsion to trip your flag and makes the bait wiggle a lot more.
2- i route my braided line thru a button so it is adjustable as a depth marker for repeat settings without having to resound the hole.
3- location,location,location...the guys above nailed it well. good luck/ tightlines/ FLAG!!!!
