Mille Lacs is a huge body of water to cover in a short period of time, but there are some shortcuts. Start by fishing the south east corner of the lake. Fish the 18 foot flats and punch holes on 30 yard increments. Check for fish with a camera or flasher. Perch and walleyes like to roam these flats and will be present well into the ice fishing season. There are some large mud flats on the northwest section of the lake. These are also prime spots to attack when planning a trip. Fish for 10 or 15 minutes in each hole and move to another. Depths range from 15-25 feet. Concentrate on about 16-22 feet early on and then explore deeper water as the season progresses. Spoons tipped with crappie or fathead minnows are a top presentation. I prefer a one-inch spoon tipped with maggots for perch and a larger spoon tipped with a minnow for walleye. Swimming lures will work as well. Concetrate on the flats when you fish Mille Lacs and be patient. Fishing is best from 6-9am and from 3-7 pm.
