Was out couple days ago, looking for bluegill hill. after drilling 150 holes gave up and went for perch all around that area. Caught 1 little one. Tryed 22to15ft areas. Didn't get much of nothing till went into 7ft. Couple of small northern then but no eyes. Buddy went next day and fished all around shumacers island. he did about the same just caught a bunch of little perch. On camera he saw large schools of 4 inch perch. Is there any particular spot on the lake for perch?

POSTED      : 20:12:06 01/16/2002
Walleyeman,
Most walleyes do travel in schools most of the time, but I very rarely get tip ups within a couple minutes of each other . Most of the time a fisherman sees a flag go up and runs after it or spooks the fish even when walking to it spooking the school and turning them off. And a lot of times walleyes arent in schools especially in a lake like shawano where the population isn't all that great. Now take winnebago for example you might have a ton of action for about 15 minutes as a big school comes through and that might be it for the night. Thats just my opinion i'm sure other people have good opinions also. Well i'll be out this weekend for sure and post back on monday. Good fishin. Brian B.

Some nice northerns caught around us. One twenty feet from us, measured 36" and weighed 10 1/2 lbs. Caught around 2:00 p.m. in 15 ft. of water. There was 9"-11" of ice. Trucks out on ice all over.

Went out sat at about 2pm, sat until 8pm. We got lots of tip up action. 11 northerns total between us with three actually about 26 inch class. Nice size perch 9-10" class hitting large shiners on tip ups. kept about a dozen for a nice fry. had alot of fun, hope ice stays safe enough to go again soon. We were fishing the cecil side in about 8-10'. Tight lines!

SUBJECT    :Walleyes
REPORTER : Brian B.
POSTED      : 21:36:23 01/07/2002
Sorry it took me so long to get back. I moved the shack to a small underwater hump. I fished till about midnight got a couple eyes and a few northerns. One eye was about 19". Still am not happy with how fishing is going. Thats alright its just good to be out there cuz i would probably be going insane if there was no ice yet. Heard some pretty good action coming from the west shore but mostly northerns in about 5-10 ft. of water. Another person fell through yesterday i'm not sure where but i heard that a spot N.E. of the island just froze so i would advise staying away from that area. Seems like most of the walleyes i heard of being caught or did catch were about 18-20", so i'm thinking that is probably the best year class and seeing the last two years the fishing has been pretty good on 15-17" fish that its the same year class, and not only are they that much smarter but 90 percent the anglers that caught those 15-17" walleyes kept them making it even harder to catch them, I'm sure there is still other good year classes out there but i for one hardly ever catch undersized walleyes out there so that could be telling us something (not a whole lot coming up) so when you catch a 20 incher let it go and spawn and keep the 15-17" fish because most likely the bigger fish will be the females in the system that will keep the walleye population up. Well good fishing. Brian B.

I'm heading out tommorow, move shack a little bit and then i'll probably stay out till midnight. I'll post on sunday how i do. Deeper is better, with no snow cover the walleyes are pretty spooky. Good luck this weekend. I agree with tom, jigging on shawano can be productive at times but tip up fishing is more consisten. Theres a lot of good spots between the point and shummachers island. Try steep drops and underwater humps. Good luck. Brian B.

Thats where i primarily fish. Between the island and the point on the breaks. I tried on the deep side of the weed beds right before the break. I fished them three nights and it produced one walleye the last night i fished an underwater hump. Missed one eye at the hole. I always try to stay away from crowds. The easiest way not to catch walleyes on shawano is follow crowds. I think the cold front that just came through + the full moon + the crystal clear ice is really keeping the eyes from going on there early ice feeding pattern. Well I'll try some new spots on sarurday and keep you posted. It's part of fishing, you cant ever give up and i know i'll find them its just going to take a little more time and finesse this year. Well good luck guys. Good fishin. Brian B.

brian, fishing is weird this year cause of late ice and all the noise on the ice..... Been having excellent luck fishin the edges of shallow weed beds from deeper water.... as far as panfish i think goin a little deeper is better been working off and on for me.You gotta get away from the crowds this year... eyes seem to be really spooky when its noisy.... more so than last year. Try out between ceicel point and the island.... i know thats a huge area but find the steep break and fish the deeper water. Or try straight out from boat landing in cecil bay..... also some good spots on other side of lake from cecil side.good luck man.. let me know how u do......Al-seymour

Fished 4 full days and nights. A few northerns and a couple walleyes. Last year i pulled 52 walleyes from shawano through the ice i'll be lucky to get 5 the way things are going this year. I have to find some fish. I've been fishing underwater humps in 10-15 ft. of water along weedlines. No luck. Has anyone been out around shumaccers island. I don't know if i'm willing to risk it. I seen a snowmobiler almost break through all the way today. It may look safe and feel safe but theres a few spots that just froze last night. So be careful. If anyone has any good or bad reports please post them we can work together to find fish. Even if its a bad post post it so we know to rule that spot out. thanks for info. Good fishin.

As for the fishing pretty slow, actually really slow. Got a few nice walleyes and a few small snake northerns. Tried all over. I won the lions club derby with a 2 and a half pound walleye. I fished the derby saturday and took first and second in the walleye division with a 3lber and a 2 pounder. I caught five walleyes that day and not once fished after dark. I've been known to get them during the day and really ran into quite a few. I fished pretty much all last week and weekend. My total number of walleyes is up to 27 for this year and that three pounder is the largest. Although i haven't gotten any pigs i only caught three that were undersized. The fishing has really tapered off though now. This weekend should be good according to moon charts and the warmer weather and snow coming. Bluegills, perch, and crappies are still being caught mostly 6-10ft of water but smaller than average size. Northerns are small again like every other year. The fishing out here this year has been average to below average all year but you never know theres still a good two months left. The ice on the lake varys mostly 8-12 inches though. There is a layer of slush that might slow you down. I wouldn't take anything but a 4 wheel drive truck or 4 wheeler out there now. For any additional info about the derby or about fishing e-mail me or post a message. Good luck and good fishing

We didn't get much jigging although it was pretty windy and nobody was in the mood to sit out there and freeze.

There was a tournament and we went over to the Sunset Grill (ex Bamboo bar) and saw some of the fish come in. 8lb northern was in the lead last I looked, didn't find out where they caught it but i'm sure it wasn't on Shawano. SUBJECT    :Fished Friday and Saturday off County Park
REPORTER : Rob
POSTED      : 09:48:56 12/18/2000
I fished Friday afternoon and Saturday off the County Park in about 12 -14 feet (varied depending upon how far from the shanty you wanted to go).

We caught 15 northern (only kept a couple for pickling) and a couple blue gills on Friday in about 3 hours and saw nearly everyone out there running for tipups. Our biggest was only 23 inches. Right about 4:30pm we had 2 walleye in the 16-17 inch range and then we hung it up at 5:00pm when it was just past dark. Golden shiners seemed to work the best, varied sizes and smaller towards dusk. We only got 1 strike on the river shiners.

Don't know if the hustle of activity Friday was related to being just before the snow storm but Saturday was slow, no panfish (not that we jigged much in the snow and wind) and 15 Northern all < 20 inches. We did manage 2 more walleye just about the same time as Friday and again didn't stick it out much past dark.

The ice was about 10.5 inches off the Park. I heard from other guys that off the west side it was only about 8 inches. It was about an even split off the Park between those that drove out and those that parked and took 4wheelers or walked out. The snow on Saturday made it fairly deep to where I don't think a car would make it very far without a path and would probably get hung up anyway. When I left Sunday morning there were trucks all over Cecil bay but I didn't hear how thick the ice was over there.

Big northerns and shawano just don't go toghether but there are a few larger ones out there. I've had the best luck in deeper water. Although i only walleye fish i've pulled bigger ones from the deep. Walleye are proggressively slowing now with all the traffic but they are still out there. Deeper than usual and very lathargic. 10-15ft. of water with tip-ups with 6lb mono leader, #12 hook and small shiner is producing the best. Good luck and for additional info e-mail me.

I have ice fished Shawano Lake a few times last year and I am looking for help in locating the fish. This will be my third year fishing on the ice, and I could use all the help I can get. I like to fish walleye, northern, perch, crappie, and blue gill. All help will be greatly appreciated and I look forward to this season.
Thanks for the help,

Rob.

Hey Todd,

The ice is in good shape 4-7+ on most lakes in the area. You may want to bring your powered
auger for shawano the ice is putting on fast with no snow cover. There is a good bait shop
if your coming into shawano on highway 29 west at the first light take a right the bait shop is on the right
you can't miss it.

3-4 inches of ice but open water in a lot of places.
Caught 3 northerns right before dark... stayed
into dark no walleyes to be had. The ice is very
